Who I am — and the concept that grew out of two decades of work.
I'm Andreas Heumann — a sports scientist (Dipl.), personal trainer, and founder of the Thrive Zone Personal Training studio in Berlin-Mitte. I've worked with people every day since 2003. What came out of it is more than training plans: a way of thinking about what actually makes a person strong, healthy and truly alive — a framework I've built and refined over twenty years. The Thrive Zone Academy is how I share that knowledge today — beyond one-on-one training. This is the story behind it.
Fitness Expert (Radio · TV)
From a love of movement to a method of my own.
Long before I knew this would become my profession, I already loved to move — a restlessness that hasn't left me to this day. It led me to Humboldt University in Berlin and a degree in sports science — and straight from there to what suits me best: working with people.
Observation turned into a system
I've been a self-employed personal trainer since 2003. In that time I've trained very different people — young and old, elite athletes and complete beginners, people with a clear goal and people who just wanted to find their way back to themselves. And over the years, something became clear: however different the paths are, the load-bearing basics are the same for everyone.
I collected those recurring patterns, tested them, and pulled them together into a system of my own — the Thrive Zone Personal Training framework. It joins what I know as a sports scientist from the research with what two decades of practice have shown me.
Thrive, don't just survive.
I spent a long time looking for a word for what I see in my work every day. The people who come to me are all different: some have never felt how good it is to be active and strong in their own body; some want to lose weight, or simply to feel at ease again; some were sporty once and lost it over the years — to work, a desk, a long break; and some are already active and sense there's more in them. However different the starting points, there's almost always more there than the person themselves suspects.
When someone comes alive
And then I watch them truly come alive. They discover a vitality, a physical confidence and a sense of their own capability they never knew they had. Over time they tell me how much it changes their lives — how they see themselves, their confidence, the feeling of being at home in their own body, and how they carry that out into the world. It happens when two things come together: someone to guide them over the first hurdles — and a system to grow with.
Why "thrive"
That's the process I wanted to name: how a person unlocks physical potential that lay hidden for years — under inactivity, extra weight, illness, or simply a lack of access. In German, "aufblühen" — to blossom — comes close, but it leans too far toward plants and spring; too narrow a frame. The English word "thrive" fits best: it carries blossoming, opening up and growing all at once.
The Potential Bubble
This is how I picture your capacity: a space with a border that isn't fixed. With the right, carefully measured stimulus it stretches, like a balloon that holds more — a protected space where you can safely push to your edge, learn where it is, and deliberately push it further out. The key: the expansion is the point, not the arrival.
Thrive, don't just survive. Not just getting by — growing. So my starting point is never your deficit; it's your potential — at any age, from any starting point.
Five pillars that together form a protected space.
For a person to grow into their potential, five basics have to hold at the same time. I call them the five pillars — and they aren't a checklist, they're a connected system. When one pillar is weaker, the whole system feels it. When all five hold, you get something that's more than their sum.
1 · Training
The foundation of physical development. Strength first, because it's the base everything else builds on — grounded in science and doable in real life.
2 · Nutrition
The raw material for health, energy and performance. Food that genuinely nourishes your body, rather than weighing it down with things only disguised as nourishment.
3 · Mindset
The inner steering: how you make decisions, meet resistance, and stay consistent — especially on the days when motivation is somewhere else.
4 · Healthy Habits
The daily routines that carry everything: sleep, everyday movement, recovery, stress regulation — and surroundings that make follow-through easy.
5 · Flow
The state that emerges once the four pillars stand: follow-through gets easier, focus gets clearer — you're "in it" rather than pushing yourself through it.
The Protective Shield — your ring of resilience. Around the five pillars sits an outer ring. It's produced by the pillars working together, and it cushions whatever comes from outside: stress, an infection, a jam-packed week. Neglect one pillar and the ring develops a gap — which closes again as soon as you tend to it. That's why the Thrive Zone isn't something you reach once and tick off; it's something you keep alive, week after week. Read the full lesson on the Protective Shield →
The principles hold for everyone. Your plan is yours alone.
This is the heart of my work — and the reason personal training is the most individual form of training there is.
What holds for everyone
Your body follows principles that apply to every person — biologically hard-wired. Strength training builds muscle and makes you stronger. The right stimulus plus recovery produces adaptation. Progressive overload, recovery, consistency: these ground rules don't change, whoever you are.
What holds only for you
But no two people are the same. Your history, your health, old injuries, your physical starting point, your genetic makeup and your daily life are all unique. The real skill — and exactly what a personal trainer is for — is translating those universal principles precisely onto your situation. Not an off-the-shelf plan, but yours.
That's why it always begins with an individual assessment — not a label like "beginner" or "advanced", but the question of where you actually stand: what your body brings with it, how it moves, what strains it, where you want to go. In one-on-one training I read that directly; in the Thrive Zone system it's the first step, before any plan even makes sense. And that's exactly what the Academy is for: teaching you the principles so you can translate them onto your own situation.
The principles the system runs on.
What emerges in one-on-one training flows into the Thrive Zone system — and becomes what I share in the Academy, in workshops and in the app. Four principles carry it, whether you train in person, sit in a workshop, or work through a lesson on your own.
Science meets experience
As a sports scientist, I make decisions on what the research supports — grounded in what two decades of practice have shown. Experience shows what holds up in everyday life. Science explains why. Together, they're what makes the difference.
The foundation first
We first make the most of what's already there, before we think about limits. And we train in an integrated way: strength, mobility and stability in one session, smartly linked — producing results that isolated training never delivers.
I'm your guide
You're the hero of your story; I'm the guide who gets you there faster, with everything I've learned along the way. I explain in real time why something matters — so that in time you understand what you're doing, instead of just going through the motions.
In the end, you become independent
My goal isn't dependence, it's autonomy: that you understand what you're doing and can apply it yourself — in training, in a workshop, or alone with a lesson. That's exactly what the Academy is for.
How change actually happens. In five steps that apply at every level: Awareness (understanding what is) → Direction (deciding where to) → Plan (setting the steps) → Practice (sticking with it until it's a habit) → Review (checking and adjusting). Not a one-off program, but a loop that keeps adapting to your life.
Strength grows from resistance you choose.
Maybe the most important lesson from twenty years: growth doesn't happen in comfort. Resistance is your ally — when you choose it and control the amount yourself. Body, mind and character grow stronger against what challenges them, step by step.
Consistency beats intensity
80% consistency at 60% intensity gets you further than 60% consistency at 100%. That's why I build training that fits into your life — not training that blows it apart. I work with commitment, which is structural, rather than motivation, which comes and goes.
Progress changes who you are
The strongest drive comes from within. When you feel and measure yourself getting stronger, it shifts how you see yourself: "I'm trying to get fitter" becomes "I'm someone who trains." That identity carries further than any comparison with others.
Where this concept is in the highest demand.
Two groups have come to me especially often over the years — and both want the same thing: the maximum result, precisely fitted to a life with very little room to spare.
Actors, models & artists
Their success is tied directly to fitness, health and how they look — and like elite athletes, they often have to be in peak shape by a fixed date. Over nearly two decades I've had the privilege of coaching Devid Striesow, Friedrich Mücke, Timur Bartels, model Tess Hellfeuer and para-sprinter Ali Lacin, among others. The skill lies in building the training and nutrition so the body peaks at exactly the right moment — despite travel, shooting schedules and a packed calendar.
People whose time counts
Decision-makers, founders, creatives — people with full calendars, for whom time is the scarcest resource. They don't need more training; they need the right training: two precise sessions a week that land, and plans that hold up on the road too. That's exactly what exclusive one-on-one is built for — every minute spent on your goal.
"I trained with Andreas for our feature film 'Unsere Zeit ist jetzt'. I had to put on a lot of muscle in a fairly short time. Andreas built me a training program tailored perfectly to me, plus a matching nutrition plan. The result was exactly as good as expected — four kilos of muscle and a noticeably bigger upper arm."

Where I work — and where I explain.
A private space, 50 metres from the Spree
My Thrive Zone Personal Training studio in Berlin-Mitte, right on the Spree, is where the observations behind the system come from — in calm, exclusive one-on-one work. Alongside me is a team of five trainers with clear strengths — strength training, functional mobility, physiotherapy and rehab support, nutrition coaching, and boxing. Every session here sharpens the knowledge I then pass on — in the Academy, in workshops and in the app. And if you'd like to, you can of course train with me in person too.
Explaining is my second calling
As a fitness expert I'm a regular guest on radio and television — including the expert panel on rbb 88.8, where we talk through current fitness topics and answer listeners' questions. My job there is to turn sports science into something you can act on tomorrow morning. That translation has become a craft of its own over the years — and the Thrive Zone Academy is the continuation of it: the same substance my clients get one-on-one, opened up as free lessons for everyone.
So this knowledge doesn't stay in the studio.
The framework is the core — and I pass it on in several ways, beyond the one-on-one.
The ThriveZone Framework
The five-pillar system as one whole — the basis for every training, nutrition and everyday-life decision I work from.
The Thrive Zone Academy
My open knowledge format: a new lesson every two weeks, read in a few minutes, always ending with one concrete next step. For everyone who wants to understand, properly, how their body works.
My own platform
I'm building a platform that lays out a client's whole day in one clear structure — training, nutrition, recovery and habits in one place. Round-the-clock support that feels light.
Workshops & retreats
Formats that bring together people who want to make a real step — knowledge you don't just hear, but feel first-hand in your own body.
What becomes possible: Mirko
Mirko started training at 47 — zero pull-ups, a pronounced rounded back, limited mobility, low strength across the board. Today, at 50, he's fitter than he was at 20, 30 or 40: eight kilos of muscle gained, six kilos of fat lost, forty kilometres of running a week, ten pull-ups with added weight.
The basis was nothing spectacular — it was exactly the concept on this page: structure, patience, and one simple rule — today's session matters more than next year's plan.
Balance is the principle.
As a martial artist and a lifelong athlete, I know what it means to focus everything you've got on a single point in one instant — then meet the next moment just as calmly. The key is the right balance. What drives me is simple: to show people that change is real and measurable — at any age, from any starting point. I don't just get you into the best shape of your life; I hand you the understanding to keep it. That's why I share what I know as openly as I can — not just one-on-one, but with everyone ready to use it.
Stay close to the Academy.
Every two weeks I turn a piece of twenty years of practice and sports science into a lesson you can put to use right away. Join the newsletter, take a look at the workshops — and if you'd like to work one-on-one, you'll find me in Berlin-Mitte.
