Seated Dumbbell Arnold Press
Sit upright on a flat bench with the dumbbells in front of your shoulders, palms facing you. Press powerfully overhead, turning your palms to face forward, until your arms are straight above your shoulders. Then lower slowly, turning back as you go.
This is the overhead press pattern, done seated: the weight travels from your shoulders upwards until your arms are straight above your shoulders. The turn that goes with it, palms facing you at the bottom and facing forward at the top, is why it is also called the dumbbell rotation press.
The bench gives you a stable base while your upper body stays upright. What matters is where you finish: arms directly above your shoulders. If your mobility makes that hard, stretching and exercises like the Dumbbell Pullover help you get there.

Starting position
Sit upright on a flat bench without a backrest, feet planted on the floor. Keep your upper body tall and your abs lightly braced.
Hold the dumbbells steady in front of your shoulders, palms facing you, elbows under the dumbbells.
Now press the dumbbells powerfully overhead, turning them as you go, until your palms face forward and your arms are straight above your shoulders. From the top, lower slowly and turn back into the starting position.

Common faults
| Fault | How to fix it |

| Your arms finish in front of your head | Finish with the dumbbells directly above your shoulders. If that is hard, go lighter and work on your mobility. |
| The turn disappears along the way | Go lighter and turn on purpose: palms facing you at the bottom, facing forward at the top. |
| You lean back | Brace your abs lightly and stay sitting tall. |
| The two dumbbells move differently | Practise with a very light weight, ideally in front of a mirror, until both move evenly. |
Variations

Reps and load
Press up powerfully and lower slowly, with a load you control cleanly overhead. Start with a very light weight.
The exercise pairs well with push-ups and the One Arm Dumbbell Row.

Your shoulders move the weight while your trunk keeps your upper body upright under the load overhead.

Seeing it done right is not the same as doing it right
Video, cues and variations take you a long way. What they cannot give you is an outside eye at the moment the movement isn't quite there yet. That is what training with me is for — in the studio or in a workshop.

A note on context: EMG studies show which muscles an exercise recruits — that is a good reason to pick it, but it does not replace adjusting things to the person in front of you. See a doctor for persistent or severe pain.
